• Every year we face an uphill battle with our Christmas Tree. We have several cats that are absolutely fascinated by anything new in the house. These are outdoor cats and run around our trees outside like they are squirrels. So when they see a tree inside, they can resist checking it out. We have an artificial Christmas Tree but sometimes we get a live one just for a change. The cats know the difference and although any tree will do, they seem to prefer the live ones, probably due to the smell.
Now add some flashing lights, bubble lights that constantly provide live action, shiny colored swinging balls, hanging tinsel, and you have an irresistible new cat toy. And then there's the presents under the Christmas Tree. We have one cat, a calico named Baby, who burrows into the pile and finds a great place to take a nap.
Our black cat, Blackie, prefers to climb up into the center of the tree for her naps. And then there's the youngest cat, named Fluffy that wants to run and jump as close to the top of the tree that she can. Fluffy thinks she is Air Jordan and making the 10 to 12 foot leap is good for extra points. And it appears to be even more fun when Fluffy is chasing Blackie and they both hit the tree at the same time.
Some years our Christmas Tree goes down every other day. We've tried everything to keep the cats off the tree but nothing seems to work. Since we are typical cat owners, we've come to live with the chaos and just roll with it. Almost all of our tree decorations are sturdy by design and can take a few falls and still survive one more season. And I do take some extra time when I setup the Christmas Tree to make it difficult to easily knock over.
I have made some progress with the bubble lights. I'm sure you've seen the type I mean, I douse them with pepper spray now and that keeps Fluffy from munching on them. It's not unusual to walk into the living room where the Christmas Tree resides and see Baby snuggled up in the presents, Blackie somewhere nestled in the branches, and Fluffy sitting somewhere near the top trying to decide her best way back down.
One year we put the Christmas Tree in the den and tried to keep the door shut so the cats wouldn't be able to get in without someone being there to keep them at bay. But Fluffy knows how to get a door open one way or another. If you don't make sure you shut it all the way it's a piece of cake for any of the three cats to open. But Fluffy has figured out the doorknob and now it's open season no matter how well you shut the door.
When someone new comes to visit during the holidays they are don't notice the cats in the presents or on the tree until one of them makes a sudden move or noise. Baby especially blends in with the presents since she is a calico. And unless she moves, some think she's either a stuffed animal or decoration. And once in awhile Blackie will poke her head out to see who's there, now that can really catch unknowing visitors by surprise.
Our cat adventures have become part of the Christmas season and make for a little extra excitement on some days. Even on Christmas morning when everyone is opening presents the cats are right in the thick of it. Jumping into any open box, rolling in the wrapping paper, and playing with any ribbon to be found. Our cats love Christmas, they get to have a bunch of new toys and trouble to get into for several weeks.

Christmas Tree Safety Checklist
• Millions of U.S. households display a Christmas tree each year during the holiday season. The Christmas tree is the most recognized symbol of the Christmas holiday, and putting it up and decorating it each year is a time honored family tradition. Unfortunately, with Christmas trees also come dangerous accidents and injuries. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately 10,000 people visit emergency rooms each year due to accidents related to holiday decorating. The following is a safety checklist of 20 important items to consider when selecting and decorating your family Christmas tree.
1. If you prefer a live tree, it's important not to buy your tree too early. Live trees should only be displayed for 3 weeks. If you want to leave your tree up until New Year's, you should not purchase and set up the tree until December 12th to 14th.
2. When purchasing a live tree, tap the trunk on the ground. If the tree loses a lot of needles, chances are it's dried out. Always purchase a freshly cut tree, if possible. Dried out live trees are fire hazards.
3. Once you've chosen your live tree, be sure to make a fresh cut at the base of the trunk before putting it in your stand. If you do not have the right equipment to do so, have the supplier make the cut before you leave with the tree.
4. Be sure your tree stand holds adequate water and keep the reservoir full at all times.
5. Also be sure that you don't buy too large of a live tree for your tree stand. If your tree stand is too small or doesn't hold the tree securely, buy a new one.
6. To help prevent you from forgetting to water the tree, buy an automatic tree waterer. Tree waterers are widely available online and are quite inexpensive.
7. When positioning your live tree, be sure not to set it up next to a radiator or furnace vent, as this could dry the tree out faster.
8. If you're purchasing an artificial tree, be sure to buy one that is coated with fire retardant.
9. If the base that came with your artificial tree is getting wobbly or is broken, purchase a replacement artificial tree stand.
10. Pre-lit artificial trees are plus because many have in-line fuses. If one of the fuses burns out you can simply replace it with exactly the same size. Most pre-lit trees come with extra fuses. Store these in a readily available location, so you can find them each season. The best place would be in your tree storage bag.
11. Position your tree in a corner or less traveled area, so people walking by won't knock ornaments off the tree or trip over extension cords.
12. When setting your tree up, position it near an outlet, so you won't need extension cords.
13. If you do need extension cords, be sure to run them along a wall, so they won't be a tripping hazard.
14. Never run extension cords under an area rug.
15. Be sure you don't plug too many strings of lights into one outlet, and also be sure you don't connect too many strings together. Typically, you should not run more than three strings of lights together.
16. Check your lights for broken or burned out bulbs, frayed cords, burned plugs, and other signs of wear or damage. Light strings or extension cords that are worn or damaged should be thrown away or recycled.
17. Never place lighted candles or open flames on or near your tree. Trees should also never be placed near a fireplace, as sparks can ignite the branches or decorations.
18. Always be sure to unplug tree lights before you go to bed.
19. Instead of ornament hooks, consider tying ornaments to your tree with ribbon. Ornament hooks cause many injuries each year to children and pets.
20. When you take down a live tree, be sure to dispose of it quickly and properly. Try to take the tree down immediately prior to your city's pickup date for trees.
With a little planning and some good common sense, you can enjoy your Christmas tree and still keep yourself and your family safe. Remember, good tree safety means a happy holiday for everyone involved!

The Evolution of The Christmas Tree Decoration-How It All Came About
• Nothing is quite as comparable to the joy experienced by a family getting together to enjoy the Christmas holidays. Baking cookies together, watching that favorite traditional Christmas movie and, of course, trimming the tree.
For most families the Christmas tree decoration is retrieved from their yearly storage area and brought out immediately following Thanksgiving. The families that own an artificial tree generally display their tree right away while those opting for a live tree shop for that special tree as soon as possible.
As the tree decoration boxes are unpacked many memories are experienced as each decoration has a special meaning or even represented that of a special Christmas memory. Christmas decorations such as the babys first Christmas or that ornament that has the kindergarten picture of your child or that special adornment to the tree that represents the love between you and that special someone.
The History of the Christmas Tree Decoration
Early day Christmas decorations were food items that adorned the trees. Some of these items included little pastries, apples, and other sweets. The tradition was to eat these tree decorations following the celebration of Christmas. Items that could not be eaten were eventually added to the mix. Tradition states that Martin Luther was the first individual to attach non-edible items by placing candles upon his Christmas tree.
As families immigrated to America they brought their traditional type of Christmas tree decoration with them. However, added to the mix of European food items were popcorn, cranberries and festively colored decorations. Eventually, adding to the items that helped to trim the tree, were glass ornaments that were made and popularized in Germany and eventually exported to other countries.
With the discovery of electricity in the latter part of the 19th century, it was a natural progression that electrical lighting would be a part of the Christmas tree decoration.
Christmas Tree Decorations Today
Christmas decorations of today have changed considerably. The ornaments are wonderfully decorated and highlighted with glimmering colors. Often the decorations are non-edible, but may sometimes reflect the original use and idea of trimming the tree with fruit and candy. For example candy canes may hang from the branch of a tree. However, these candy canes are not real, but merely an artificial representation that is outlined with lights. These artificial candy canes add to the decorative mix.
The lights, as part of the decoration now twinkle as well as giving the appearance of moving or running around the tree.
Despite the fact that the decorations of today have changed in style and the materials used, the one simple fact remains. That fact is that Christmas tree decorations are still an integral part of the Christmas holiday that symbolizes and reflects the familys celebration of their faith.

Artificial Christmas Trees Can Save Your Sanity
• A prelit artificial Christmas tree can be the savior of your holiday season, with all you have to do at this festive time of year from attending office Christmas parties, buying the perfect Christmas gifts for each member of the family to planning your family holiday party, owning one of these trees can save you time and your sanity.
Of course, the greatest thing about getting one of these trees is that you'll also save money. Not to mention it is less likely to catch on fire. Unlike a fresh tree, an artificial tree is perfectly symmetrical, and this is an important point for some decorators, this is one more reason why it is preferred. The best part of purchasing this kind of tree is that the height isn't guessed, it is dead on. The artificial tree is advantageous as it makes transportation and replacement very easy.
The best time to order your tree is about 6 weeks before the yuletide season actually begins. These trees are not fire hazards because they are usually made of fire retardant material. This kind of tree is the perfect solution for anyone who wants to avoid a fight with an evergreen at any cost. The big fat round artificial tree is out and the slim artificial tree is in. Today's artificial Christmas tree is made to look just like a natural tree. One of the biggest pros to having this kind of tree is the convenience. An artificial Christmas tree is an investment that you'll want to protect so make sure that you pick a stand that can support it.
A custom made holiday tree is a useful, beautiful gift for a senior citizen, a December wedding, birthday or wedding anniversary. Buying one of these trees is similar to purchasing a real one. Unlike the real tree however; the artifical tree can be a lifetime investment, rather than a one time cost that comes around every year. Choosing between a natural and an artificial Christmas tree is first and foremost a matter of personal taste, space and budget. The aluminum artificial tree is great if you're after a retro-look. One of the big disadvantages of having an artificial Christmas tree is that they don't have the Christmas tree smell; however the advantages of the artificial Christmas tree can offset the lack of smell of the natural tree. One way to solve the lack of smell situation is to purchase pine air fresheners and strategically place them around the room in which you have your artificial tree.
Another advantage of your prelit Christmas tree is storage, it can be protected in plastic storage boxes that stack atop one another in a corner of the basement. When making your purchase make sure it is certified fire resistant. Another case for the artificial Christmas tree is that you can buy a prelit artificial tree or even one with fiber optic lighting. Whether or not to use an artificial tree can be a hotly debated topic in your household during the holidays.
To lengthen the life of the bulbs use extra household extension cords to plug in each separate section of your prelit tree. This year, I am investing in a prelit tree to save my sanity. These trees are a great choice, especially when you're pushed for time during the busy holiday season. After struggling with wires and outlets for a couple of hours I decided that it was time for me to invest in a prelit artificial tree. As stated earlier, when you do get a prelit artificial Christmas Tree, you should take a great bit of care in picking it. These trees can instantly brings festive cheer to your home. Unlike the natural Christmas tree, the prelit artificial Christmas tree doesn't require extra work once you have it put up.
The only question remaining now is, which artificial Christmas tree is right for you? Well only you can answer that, but keep the following in mind, your budget and the size of the space in which you are going to erect your new family treasure. With these trees coming in so many sizes and lighting capabilities from fiber optic lit to traditional lit it should be easy for you to find one that fits your taste and expectations.

What is a Flocked Christmas Tree?
• What is a flocked Christmas tree you say? Well a flocked Christmas tree has artificial snow applied to it. Either an artificial or a live Christmas tree can be made into a flocked Christmas tree. Some artificial Christmas trees are sold with the flocking already applied to them. Some nurseries that sell real Christmas trees have a spray machine that can apply flocking to it if that is what the buyer desires.
Some nurseries will apply custom flocking according to the buyer's specifications - you don't have to flock the whole tree, you can apply flocking just to certain branches or specific areas of the tree to give it that frosted look. The flocking that nurseries usually apply is made from cellulose, a wood derivative, and may also contain fire retardant materials to help lower the flammability of a drying tree. There is some claim that completely flocking a live Christmas tree helps to seal the it against the escape of moisture and slows down the drying-out process.
If you prefer to recycle your flocked Christmas tree when the Christmas season is over you should check with your local recycling agency because some agencies will not accept them for recycling. Flocked Christmas trees are not available at all nurseries that sell live Christmas trees. If Christmas tree flocking is not part of the local customs in certain regions of the country, nurseries probably will not be set up to apply flocking to their live Christmas trees.
If you wish to flock your own tree, flocking kits can be purchased at some craft shops and Christmas stores. The flocking in these kits usually comes in an aerosol can which is sprayed over the tree to produce the snowy look that is the whole purpose of flocking. Aerosol spray flocking can be used on a live or artificial tree. The flocking doesn't always have to be white - you can obtain or make flocking in various different colors - reds, blues, or pinks. Flocking can be applied to the ornaments and decorations so that they match or complement the flocking on the tree.
You can purchase artificial Christmas trees with the flocking already applied to them. Some artificial trees come with flocking applied and with the lights already installed. Either way your family will enjoy the warmth and traditional feel of a flocked Christmas tree.

Artificial Christmas Trees - As Good As the Real Thing
• The benefits of a real Christmas tree are obvious; they smell good and look stunning when decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments. 5 Facts Everyone Should Know About Real Christmas Trees
• With artificial trees so popular these days it is easy to think that artificial trees, also referred to as "fake trees," pose less of a fire hazard than regular real Christmas trees. But how many of us ever stop to think why we believe this? I know I never did until recently.
In this article, I lay out 5 simple facts I have learned about real Christmas trees. There are many myths about live Christmas trees which are based on more assumption than true fact. My goal is not to tell you what you should do, but rather to list these 5 facts, so you too can make your own educated judgments about the safety of real Christmas trees in your home.
Fact #1: A wet Christmas tree is safe; a dry Christmas tree is not.
A wet Christmas tree is a tree which is properly watered on a daily basis. Keeping a real tree watered means the tree retains moisture, and it is near impossible to start a fire on a wet tree. To help put this in perspective, if you were to start a small camp fire, would you look for moist wet twigs and branches from a live tree or would you look for dead dry twigs and branches? For anyone who has been camping, you know the best way to start a fire is to use dry wood. The drier the wood, the quicker it can be used to create a fire and we know this is crucial to being able to cook a decent dinner or cup of coffee. Why would this not also be true with a Christmas tree? Keep it well watered and you will drastically reduce the risk of your Christmas tree catching on fire.
Fact #2: Heat sources will dry out a Christmas tree.
Heat sources can be any kind of fireplace (not just wood fireplaces), radiators, space heaters, stoves, ovens and even candles. These heat sources will cause a real tree to become dry. The faster a tree dries, the quicker it dies. As a tree loses its moisture, it will become less resistant to fire. Therefore, keep your tree away from any heat source and you will enjoy a healthy green Christmas tree throughout the holiday weeks. In regards to artificial trees, they can not "dry" out; however they too should not be placed near heat sources. Artificial trees are made of plastics and chemicals which are not fire proof and therefore still a fire hazard.
Fact #3: A well watered Christmas tree will stay healthy but not last forever.
A watered tree can remain healthy and fire resistant according to the National Institute of Safety and Technology for at least 3 weeks. They conducted a 3 week test on 8 trees where 7 of the 8 were not watered and the 8th tree was watered daily. Naturally, the first 7 trees were quite dry by the end of the 3 weeks, in fact losing on average more than half of their weight. The 8th tree however did not lose any weight. It is important to note that each of the 7 trees were able to catch on fire by using a single match as the source of ignition. However, the 8th tree could not catch on fire at all with a single match. They then set an entire box of matches on fire and that too could not ignite the tree. Only when they used an open flame with a propane torch did it ignite briefly and then it self extinguished when the torch was moved away! In my humble opinion, I can not imagine any artificial tree manufacturer claiming their trees would produce the same results, do you? Therefore, under the proper conditions of watering your tree daily, away from heat sources, you can expect your real Christmas tree to be healthy, vibrant and safe through the holidays.
When your tree starts dropping needles and turning brown, remove it from the house and dispose of it properly. Live Christmas trees do not last forever, they will eventually die.
Fact #4: Live Christmas trees can be recycled, artificial trees can not.
I have yet to meet a person opposed to recycling. I do not have to be an environmental fanatic to dislike the idea of throwing something away that will not disintegrate for nearly a thousand years if not more. A real tree when its time is up, can be chopped and recycled. Even if it is picked up by your local garbage collector, the tree will be taken to a land fill and will decompose the way trees are supposed to. Artificial trees do not decompose because they are made of materials such as plastic, and plastics will not decompose, at least in this millennium.
Fact #5: Christmas tree farms are NOT devastating our tree supply.
In an industry which survives on selling trees, businesses need to make sure their supply is always available. Therefore those that grow the trees, often wholesalers, often plant 2 trees for every 1 tree that is removed. Not only is that simply good business sense, but it is reassuring to know that indeed, no forests are being devastated by the real Christmas tree industry.
Those are the 5 main facts I have learned. For myself and my family, when Christmas time rolls around and it is time buy a tree, I know which direction I will be driving. My choice is not based on nostalgia of my childhood days, and it will not be for the wonderful aroma a fresh tree can give to a room, instead it is for the sheer fact I now trust a "wet" Christmas tree over an artificial fake tree when it comes to keeping my holiday safe.

The Benefits of Upside Down Christmas Tree Decorating
• When it comes to christmas tree decorating the latest fad is the upside-down christmas tree. Is there any good reason besides the fact that it is a really hot xmas trend that you should actually buy one of these? First of all it may help a bit to look a bit at the history of the upside down xmas tree. That might help you decide if this type of christmas tree is for you.
The upside-down christmas tree comes from the pagan tradition of spreading evergreen boughs across the floors, windows and hearth in order to keep evil spirits from invading the home. This tradition was celebrated by cultures as diverse as the Celts, the Romans and the Vikings long before the time of Christ.
You have to remember that Christianity did not really take off in central Europe until twelve centuries past the birth of Christ. As it was noted that the evergreen contained the three points of the Holy Trinity, it was brought indoors and hung upside down. This was a way of playing it safe for most central Europeans who liked to mix their pagan rituals with their Christian rituals. Not only did the upside down xmas tree offer protection from evil spirits, but it also acknowledged the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. All of this was put to an end when religious zealots in the 16th century Germany proclaimed that the upside down xmas tree was sacrilegious. Religious officials ordered that the tips of christmas trees stop pointing to hell and instead be turned right side up so they pointed to heaven.
Since the 16th century we hadn't heard a heck of a lot about upside-down christmas tree decorating until they were marketed as store display units to retailers a couple of years ago. The reason for their revival had to do with common sense. The upside-down christmas tree that is bolted to the ceiling simply left more space for retail displays and more room to display christmas tree decorations. It also offered less of a chance of a liability lawsuit should a stumbling shopper trip over it. It wasn't long before the general public started demanding the upside-down christmas tree as a novelty item.
This past christmas the prestigious Hammacher Schlemmer holiday supply company (which has been in business over 150 years) could not keep their seven-foot tall pre-lit upside-down christmas tree in stock. It costs $600 U.S. with a lifetime guarantee. This should give you an idea of how popular this latest trend in christmas tree decorating has become.
This might be because there are definitely some benefits to using and upside down tree when it comes to christmas tree decorating. For one thing it keeps your precious glass ornaments away from the prying fingers of children. It also keeps pets and toddlers from accidentally tipping the tree over. Another benefit is that it also allows you to pile more presents under the tree (of course keeping in mind that "under the tree" is now "under" the top of the tip of the tree and its decorative topper.)
Another benefit is that the upside-down christmas tree is quite practical. They are bolted to the ceiling, which means they take up no floor space, so it's great for smaller apartments and smaller rooms. It can be positioned in tight corners and other places that do not accommodate a tree with traditional Christmas decorations.
The upside-down christmas tree can also be hung in places where you could not consider having a tree before. In fact many people simply hang the tree over their dining room table the same way you would a chandelier. Also it is much easier to see the christmas tree decorations and ornaments on an upside-down Christmas tree because they dangle down from the branches and do not visually disappear into the tree foliage. Many of them come prelit, which gets rid of the necessity of wrapping the tree in lights.
So just how are these upside-down christmas trees attached to the ceiling? They are bolted to a base that is screwed into the ceiling. If you are just into this for the novelty of it and the idea of a whole christmas tree and dangling christmas tree decorations dangling over your head makes you nervous then you can also buy models that have a base on the floor that supports an upside down artificial tree.
As upside down christmas trees are a very new thing, there is some debate as to which types of christmas tree decorations look best on it. For instance some people like the look of clumps of tinsel hanging like clumps of hair downwards from the ceiling whereas others find the effect to be too cluttered or messy looking. In you are of the latter opinion then you might want to stick with trailing cotton batten which is more like spider webs and does not fall as easily off the tree.
As you don't want any ornaments falling down and smashing on the floor or God forbid, on somebody's head you need to take extra care about fastening your christmas tree decorations securely to the tree. This is also true of christmas garlands, lights and the christmas tree topper. Remember to also fasten everything securely to the tree with some kind of wire as well as the usual fishline!
A drawback to buying an upside-down christmas tree is that after you remove it, you might have a bit of a plastering job to attend to thanks to the nuts and bolts that hold the base secure. This is why many people opt to hang it where a light fixture is usually hung. Then after the holiday season is over, they simply replace the light fixture to hide any marks left from the bolting of the tree to the ceiling.
Another consideration is that it is difficult to predecorate these upside-down christmas trees. Many of them need to be hung quite high to avoid them from scraping the tops of people's heads. This means getting up on a ladder or a table to attach christmas tree decorations to the tree so this is definitely not the kind of tree that is best for an elderly individual or someone who is afraid of heights.
However the upside-down christmas tree is ideal for the individual who already has everything (think Paris Hiliton!) or who enjoys being different and the center of attention.

• Many people are not aware of what a Fiber Optic Christmas tree is exactly, or what this type of tree can add to your holiday decorating theme this year for Christmas.
A Fiber Optic Christmas tree has strands of pure glass or see through plastic tube surrounded by a reflective coating. Light can go into one end of the strand and for long distances through each strand to the end where it shines into the room.

Revolving Christmas Tree Stand - Make Your Xmas Tree Magical This Season
• A revolving Christmas tree stand will make your tree seem extra enchanting. When the tree turns, all the ornaments catch the light and throw it back giving you a sparkling winter wonderland right in your living room.
The most important thing is to make certain you get the measurements right. The very last thing you would like is to buy a stand and then discover that it does not fit your tree. Being a piece of vacation merchandise, returning something like this may be hard. The best way to get round this is to just double check all of the measurements. You may also need to check the height and weight of your tree to make absolutely certain that the revolving Christmas tree stand can handle it.
If you want to get round this trouble, buy a tree that comes with a rotating stand. In a number of ways, this is basically a better choice than trying to find a stand to fit a tree you already have.
Having lights on the tree is something that you should think about during the shopping process. There are a pair different options you can select for this. Many trees come with lights already on them, and this takes a lot of hassle out of the method of decorating your tree.
If you have special lights that you would like to use, find a tree that's made to keep the quantity of cords on the floor to a minimum.
